Earth & Seas אֶרֶץ · יַמִּים

Dry land called out of the waters — and the Bible’s most durable picture is born.
STRONG'S H776 · H3220

The Bible’s longest-running picture is born

On day three the waters are gathered and dry land appears. Land here, sea there — and God names them both. Hold that picture, because the prophets never let it go: in vision after vision, the sea is where the nations rage and rise, and the land is where God’s people live.

DRY GROUND

Ask a sailor’s child what land means. Solid footing. Home. The sea is vast, restless, and not yours. The Bible speaks this language fluently — and it speaks it often.

The text decodes itself — twice

"And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another."
DANIEL 7:3 (KJV)
"These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth."
DANIEL 7:17 (KJV)

Daniel sees beasts rise from the sea — and the interpreting angel says plainly: they are kings. And notice: the angel says they arise “out of the earth.” The vision speaks picture-language at both ends — the sea for the churning nations they rise from, the earth for the world they rule. The sea births empires.

"And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues."
REVELATION 17:15 (KJV)

Revelation says it outright: the waters are peoples and nations. No guesswork required.

"Art thou not it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over?"
ISAIAH 51:10 (KJV)

And when Isaiah retells the exodus, he tells it as a day-three act: sea driven back, dry ground, a people brought through onto the land. Israel’s birth is narrated as land-out-of-sea.

"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea."
REVELATION 21:1 (KJV)

If oceans are just oceans, “no more sea” is strange news. If the sea is the old division of the peoples — it is the best news there is.

HONEST LIMITS

The word erets can mean the whole earth, a land, or bare ground — only context decides, every single time, and we won’t pretend the vocabulary alone settles anything. We are not claiming day three secretly says “Israel.” We are showing the picture the rest of the Bible builds from day three’s materials. Whether Genesis planted it on purpose is the question to sit with.
