In the beginning
Evening first. That is how this chapter counts a day — "and the evening and the morning." So the story starts in the dark: an unformed, unfilled deep, water without a shore, and the Spirit of God hovering over it the way a bird hovers over her nest.
Then God speaks, and there is light — three days before there is a sun to carry it. And God begins to divide: light from darkness, the waters above from the waters below, the sea from the dry land. Three days of dividing, like a builder framing rooms. Then three days of filling: lamps hung in the sky "for signs and for seasons"; the waters and the winds filled with living things — even the sea-dragons the nations feared, made and blessed like any creature; and last of all, the man and the woman — stamped with God's own image, set over the house like a king's seal. Their charter: be fruitful, fill, rule.
And then a seventh day, on which nothing is made. The builder ceases — the way a builder ceases when the house is done and he moves in. "This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell."
That is the whole story: a house framed, filled, and lived in. Whether that house is the planet, or the covenant world where God dwells with man — that is the question this site asks.
